I had been kicking around the design idea for this piece for quite some time. Sparrows and swallows have both become symbolic and iconic in today’s culture with varying meanings to different people. They strike a feeling of familiarity and have strong emotional pulls.

My original thoughts involved cutting a heart shape in the bird chests, but they seemed more organic and strong without that addition. I am very pleased with the sense of unbalance and instability that these evoke. The angles of the birds definitely created challenges, but are the reason it is such an interesting piece.

I have built a sixteen foot version of this sculpture for the Rail Trail in the city of Newburyport, MA. Sparrows is at one end of the trail and the sixteen foot version of G Swirl is at the other end.
